In Memory of Mr. Allen Wood
(SP Master, 1970s – Cricketer, Sportsman, Mentor)
We mourn the passing of Mr. Allen Wood, a man whose life left a deep and lasting mark on St. Paul’s School, Darjeeling, and on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Though he was before many of our time, stories of his brilliance—as both an educator and a sportsman—have long been part of SPS lore. Joining the school in the early 1970s, Mr. Wood, alongside Mr. Horace Stolke and Mr. Phubu Tshering, formed what many fondly remember as the “three musketeers” of St. Paul’s. Together, they were the heart of a golden sporting era, shaping teams that were admired for their strength, discipline, and spirit.
Mr. Wood was not just a teacher; he was a true all-rounder—on the field, in the classroom, and in life. Former students recall one remarkable match when he led the school team against the formidable Territorial Army. On paper, it was a mismatch. The TA, with their professional training and physical edge, were expected to overwhelm. Yet under Mr. Wood’s fearless leadership, the boys of St. Paul’s played with such heart and tenacity that the crowd was left astonished.
At halftime, when doubts were voiced, Mr. Wood—unwavering as ever—responded:
“I’ll bet 1:10 that St. Paul’s will win.”
That single moment captured who he was: a man of unshakable belief, relentless passion, and the rare gift of inspiring others to rise far above what they imagined possible.
His impact went far beyond the sports field. Years later, as Principal of Frank Anthony Public School in Bangalore, he continued to embody generosity and mentorship. Even as an alumnus visiting the city, Paulites were welcomed into his home. That simple kindness reflected the depth of his character.
Today, as we remember him, we also honor the legacy of a teacher who shaped not just athletes, but resilient, confident young people.
Our heartfelt condolences to Ma’am and the entire family. The world has lost a rare soul, but his lessons, his voice, and his spirit will live on in every life he touched.
Requiescat in pace, Sir. You inspired, you led, and you gave—always. May you rest in eternal peace.
