The students of JW and SW have had a number of learning sessions with our esteemed guest, Dr. A. Sengupta for over a week now. The focus has been mainly on the SW students and the sessions are going to continue till 11th July. Our boys have been given a chance to learn from the best and been exposed to new ideas which will be of great help while pursuing higher studies. Apart from the formal lessons, Prof. Sengupta has also been interacting informally with the students, inspiring them and guiding them on the various prospects of following careers in Physics. His presence has also benefitted our teaching faculty by introducing different teaching methodologies and the intricacies of preparing our boys for JEE, NEET, SAT exams while in school. His humility and cheerful personality makes him very approachable so that the boys and teachers alike can discuss various difficulties faced while learning and teaching. The Physics dept looks forward to collaborating with him more in the future as his presence in the school campus has inspired the department to dream bigger and achieve much more.
Amartya Sengupta has been a faculty member at the Dept of Physics, IIT Delhi since 2012.
He is an alumnus of Calcutta Boys School, Calcutta (ISC’97), and of St Xavier’s College Calcutta from where he completed his B.Sc. with Honors in Physics in 2000. After completing his MSc in Physics from IIT Delhi in 2002, he worked on his PhD in Applied Physics from Rutgers University, USA, which he completed in 2006. Post PhD, he worked as a Research Fellow at University of Leeds, UK for a year (2006 -2007), before moving back to Washington State University, USA, where he worked as a Research Associate from 2008 – 2011. Just before joining IIT Delhi, he was working as a scientist at Princeton University working on mineral physics/geoscience related areas (2011-2012). He is the present co-ordinator of the Interdisciplinary MTech Program on Optoelectronics and Optical Communications (jointly offered by the Physics and Electrical Engg Depts), a member of the Outreach and New Initiatives program at IIT Delhi and is also involved with the IIT Delhi – Abu Dhabi campus.
His present research interests are in the broad areas of THz technology and Raman imaging – his research group is working on areas of contemporary interest such as agri-photonics, plant genetics and mineral physics.
Currently, he serves on the Technical Committee of several international conferences organized by Optica (formerly Optical Society of America) and SPIE – The Society of Photonics and Instrumentation Engineers. Previously, he also served as the Chair of Technical Group on Applied Spectroscopy, Optical Society of America for a three year term ending 2021 and was the Co-Chair of the Applied Industrial Spectroscopy track of the Optical Sensors Congress in Munich, 2024.
Besides his academic and professional activities, he is very passionate about cross-country driving, reading, listening to music, and palaentology.
